History of Anterior Approach Hip Arthroplasty

The Anterior Hip Foundation (AHF) was created to be the world’s foremost incubator for the anterior approach total hip arthroplasty procedure.

First performed by Dr. Robert Judet in 1947, the anterior approach hip replacement procedure has emerged in recent years as the preferred surgical technique for patients due to its multitude of advantages, including:
  • Reduced risk of difficult complications such as dislocation
  • Reduced blood loss
  • Faster recovery of activities of daily living
  • Improved range of motion
  • Better ability to ascend and descend stairs
The large body of peer reviewed research and clinical studies examining the results of anterior approach total hip arthroplasty continues to expand and today it is believed that nearly 33% of all THA procedures performed in the USA are done via the anterior approach.
